I am fussy about food , especially sushi. This place is absolutely five star!!!!! Had sushi, miso soup, mussel dinner..and fish and chips. (All on separate days of course;). It’s consistently good . I hope they will succeed in this location. Tell your friends and family!!!! We need this place to be successful!!!!
Last night for dinner we were pleasantly surprised to find such a fine all around restaurant. We went to have sushi but what we found was great sushi, a large creative seafood menu, hand cut steaks and wonderful looking (we were too full to try) homemade desserts! The sushi chef prepares creative unusual sushi. The Hawaiian roll is outstanding, very large (almost a dinner) and it is $18.00. The miso soup, can you believe, is hearty. It has a rich broth and lots of seaweed and tofu and it is only $3.00. We also had the Philly Roll ($8.00) and the Eel Avocado Roll ($8.00) and two glasses of Pinot Noir ($11.00 each). The chef took such simple rolls and made them outstanding. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated; the service is very good; has an extensive sake menu, and wine, beer; and as I stated above the chefs are creative; and it is located off the beaten path, downtown, just a block from Mallory. Next visit we are going to try the seared tuna appetizer, the lobster roll and leave room to try one of the desserts.
What a great spot for an awesome dinner. A sushi bar, with a full menu to boot! Great service, excellent drinks and wine menu. We will be going back!
My sister and I tried this new establishment today for lunch. Having very few Japanese restaurants in the area, I couldn’t wait to taste Key West’s new sushi offerings after seeing their ad in the newspaper. We had the best sushi in the keys no doubt. Our server Larry was great; attentive, personable and knowledgeable. Larry makes a mean sakitini and is aspiring to add his spin on some new fusion drinks to the menu (which we will surely sample on our next visit). The menu is diverse, offering non-sushi items such as sandwiches, salads and various appetizers. Every dish leaving the kitchen looked and smelled delicious. El Mar has been open just eight days and competently offers lunch specials, happy hour, a local’s discount and a friendly staff. I highly recommend El Mar to any foodie looking for a nice meal in downtown Key West.
